I was talking to a student in Chile. It has taken in two million refugees from nearby Peru, Bolivia, Columbia and Venezuela. Chile has half the population of Canada. The immigration in Chile has resulted in inflation, higher rents, strain on public services, and conflicts from cultural differences. I queried the student about whether there was a racial aspect to the immigration issue in Chile. He did say that the immigrants do stand out because of skin color and even height… The cultural difference was often the result of quiet Chileans having to put up with the louder and more exuberant immigrants.
He was unaware that Canada was facing similar issues. He was even more surprised to learn that there were many South American immigrants in Brandon, going instead here than to Chile.
