I have been getting strange service recently. Things are happening that make me feel like I’m back in China where being misunderstood was the rule for me. But every time now in Canada, it seems when I make an order or try to empty myself of small change, I am misunderstood or I can’t understand the clerk. Every time, they ask me my name at a restaurant so I can pick up my food order when it’s ready, I spell my name only to have it completely misspelled on the receipt. My name has been spelled Kaulois or Anois. Or details of my order are misunderstood. I recently ordered pizzas for pickup, only to find the order filled wrong when I arrived for pickup. One of the pizzas I asked for was somehow not put on the order. An even more disconcerting thing is the lack of arithmetic skills on the part of cashiers. Today, I had to pay 25.75 for a purchase. I gave the clerk 40.75 because I only wanted bills for change and because I wanted to get rid of my loose change. (I also didn’t have a five) The clerk seemed stumped by the math required.
