9:00 AM Mass: First Scrutiny

I sat in the reserved pews at the front with my RCIA group as well as our sponsors for the first of three scrutinies we must do before being baptized (or conditionally baptized in my case). It is part of the process of getting into communion with the Catholic Church.

In the first scrutiny, we were to ponder the story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well.  Jesus told the woman of the living water.  To be honest, I couldn’t give the meaning of the living water —  the story baffled me.  Was the living water, the Holy Ghost?  But then, Father John in his homily emphasized the fact that the woman upon hearing what Jesus had to tell her, forgot about her duty at that moment:  getting water from the well, and ran back to her village to tell others of the good news.  She forgot all about her pitcher.  It is in that detail, that I get meaning from the story.  With Jesus, one doesn’t have to get so tied up in the mundane of the day to day.
