Some reasons I'll miss China

Yes, there are many things I am going to miss from my time in China. For instance:

  • the more convenient transportation.  Not having a car in Manitoba is a major problem.
  • the thinner people.
  • the feeling of safety. A lot of zombie like and menacing people walking the streets of Brandon and Winnipeg.
  • less tattoos.
  • the shopping.  Again, it's more convenient in China.
  • being able to buy liquor in supermarkets and convenience stores.  You can only buy liquor at the government liquor store or a cold beer store here in Manitoba.
  • the restaurants.  Lots of cheap restaurants in China; none in Canada.
  • It was easier to get my driver’s license.
  • The prettier girls.
  • The only diverse person being me.

Got the e-statement

I finally got the e-statement I needed from the Royal Bank.  I printed it and took it with my other necessary document to a Manitoba Public Insurance agent so I could start the process of getting my Class 5 Manitoba driver's license.  The documents were fine and got me on the system and I was able to get an appointment to take my knowledge test, but there was another hitch.

When I pass the test, I will have to turn in my Chinese driving license and get a special class of driver license, not a learner's, which allows me to drive only when I with a driver supervisor, till I can take and pass my driving test.  I told the agent I didn't know one and that I was renting a car.  He told me I could pass the knowledge test and wait to turn in my license once I resolved my situation.

And there was yet another hitch.  I am going to have to borrow a car for the road test, unless I could use the rental.

The knowledge test is on Friday.  I will have to worry the weekend about how I am going to get a car for the test.

I need the class five license for my job hunt.

Serves me right! I suppose.

Waiting on a Royal Bank e-statement

I want to prove that I reside in Manitoba so I can get my class 5 driver's license.  I have one of the documents I need.  I am waiting for the other which is my bank statement which shows me as living at my mother's house.  I first thought I would get it on the 11th, and then the 12th, and then this morning, but it may not arrive till tomorrow, or the day after that....  Annoying!!!

Crown Royal

Being able to buy Crown Royal Whiskey is another reason I'm happy to be back in Canada.

Smoke from the Forest Fires

This morning, my mother was saying that there was smoke from the forest fires.    Looking out the window, I couldn’t see anything, for it seemed like a pleasant sunny summer morning after a period of rain, but when I opened the front door, it smelled like a campfire.

In China, the air could be smoggy.

Why I am happy to be back in Canada

Let me list the reasons that I can think of, off the top of my head, that I happy to be back in Canada:

  • I can look after my mother.
  • I can experience winter.
  • My son can truly become Canadian by experiencing a Canadian winter.
  • I can meet old friends.
  • I can hear English spoken wherever I go.
  • I can see a hockey game.
  • I don't need a VPN to access the internet.  For instance, I can actually make this blog entry on my computer.  And there are lots of other things I can now do on my laptop that I couldn't do before.
  • I have many more ways in which I can make money.
  • I can find products in stores that I couldn't find in China.
  • I don't get called "laowai" when I walk in public.
  • The bread is better in Canada than in China.
  • The sky is bigger and I can see the horizon.
This list is not exhaustive.  As I said, it was made off the top of my head. I may add reasons to this list when they come to me.

And there are reasons why I am not happy to be back in Canada, but these will be listed in a future entry.

Ten Hours Aho

We dropped off Jenny at the Airport. Ten hours later, she’s still on the page.
