Lovely Autumn night.
An interesting article on a controversial topic by Conrad Black. He made some points about the wide spread practice of corporal punishment in the past about which I hadn’t previously thought. However, his judgement that the idea of residential schools was wrong without suggesting what should have instead been done to combat the problems that residential schools had been created to address ultimately made the article unsatisfying. Black has this need to somehow try to be unbiased and sober in the eyes of those who would spit in the face anyway. You have to wonder why he bothers…
The essence of bushido was defined by Saitō Chikamori as:
- Sincerity – do not lie, do not be insincere, do not be superficial
- Responsibility – do not be obsequious
- Frugality – do not be greedy.
- Politeness – do not be rude, do not slander
- Modesty – do not be boastful, do not be arrogant
- Loyalty – do not be unfaithful
- Harmony – be on good terms with comrades
- Tranquility – do not be overly concerned with events
- Compassion – show concern for one another, be compassionate, with a strong sense of duty.
His lordship disdains to wear tabi (socks) even in the coldest weather, deeming it a mark of effeminacy
